TRADITIONAL COLOURS

These 64 colours are based on some of those in use by the house-painter between 150 and 300 years ago.

The colours have been selected from two main sources:  the majority are colour-matches of a number of painters' sample cards dating from 1807, while the remainder are colour-matches of early paint recipes - the recipes were made up using original ingredients and then matched with modern pigments.

An attempt has been made to reproduce versions of a number of the colours that are referred to most frequently in contemporary texts, whilst at the same time endeavouring to show a variety of colours that were available in the 18th and early 19th centuries which might still prove useful today.
