Consultancy
Patrick Baty runs Papers and Paints, a company
specialising in all aspects of house paint and architectural
colour. His main interest, however, is in the
paints and colours used in buildings between ca.1650
and ca.1850.
Affiliations
Patrick is a member of the Executive Committee of the
Georgian Group and a founding member of both
The Architectural Paint Group and The Traditional
Paint Forum.
He is also a Fellow of both the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and of the Royal Society of Arts.
Consultancy
During the last fifteen years he has been employed as a
consultant on over one hundred
projects in Grade 1 and 2* listed buildings throughout
the United Kingdom. A number of jobs have also
been carried out in the United States. Projects
have ranged from advising on the appropriate paint
colours for buildings of the 18th, 19th and early
20th centuries, to a full technical analysis of
the painted decoration in order to establish the
original/earlier colour schemes.
Clients have included:
- private house-owners;
- architects and developers;
- government bodies;
- local authorities;
- private clubs and institutions;
- the Crown;
- local and national museums;
- local and national amenity organisations.
A varied list of projects has included:
- many sets of railings;
- a London bridge;
- a Second World War RAF station;
- several major post-fire restorations;
- an early 18th century Royal Privy Garden;
- researching paint colours in general use between
1650 and 1930 for the subsequent Dulux Heritage
range;
- the colours used on the exteriors of a number
of country estates;
- interiors associated with historical or influential
figures (George Frideric Handel, Benjamin Franklin,
the Earl of Clarendon and Jimi Hendrix - amongst
many others).
