Colour Ranges

We have one of the largest range of paint colours on offer; and one that grows every day.

As every tin of paint is tinted to order, not only can we produce the many thousands of colours from the standard Dulux and Sanderson paint ranges, but also variants of these, adjusting colours to match objects that customers have brought in.

For a number of  years we have been producing hand-painted sets of colour cards of three of our own themed ranges of paint colours:

Traditional  Colours

These 64 colours are based on some of those in use by the house-painter between 150 and 300 years ago.

The colours have been selected from three sources: the majority are colour-matches of a number of painters' sample cards dating from 1807, others are based on the research of two of the leading authorities in the field, while the remainder are colour-matches of early paint recipes - these were made up using near-original ingredients, and then matched with modern colorants.

An attempt has been made to reproduce versions of a number of the colours that are referred to most frequently in contemporary texts, whilst at the same time showing a variety of other colours available for house-painting purposes in the 18th and early 19th centuries.  As will be seen, these colours are equally valid today.

Also enclosed is an explanatory brochure with brief comments on early paints and their difference to modern ones, together with a bibliography of the key works on paint and colour of this period.  The set of hand-painted colour cards is available for sale.

Historical Colours

These are 112 colours based on those used on decorative artefacts (e.g. tapestries and pottery) through the ages. These colours were not necessarily used by the house-painter in previous centuries, they are merely indicative of colours from the applied arts, and are featured in 'family' groups such as: Colours of Egypt, Pompeian Colours, Mortlake Tapestry Colours, Wedgwood Colours and Majolica Colours. The set of hand-painted colour cards  is available for sale.

The Off Whites

This consists of 24 tints of off white and the set of hand-painted colour cards is available for sale.

The paints are all available from stock, and can be despatched anywhere - please contact us for quotes.

Some Colours of the 1950s & early 1960s

The 48 colours in this range are based on the results of work that began in the early 1950s. They reflect a number of the limited colours that were available when we started trading in 1960. Although most of the colours that we show in this range are fairly subdued we have also reproduced a few of the bolder citrines and reds. Colours that have been uncovered recently during the restoration of the Royal Festival Hall have also been included. The set of hand-painted colour cards is available for sale.
